Reddit is ending its public API. How AI agents can still comment from your Chrome

Reddit is closing the doors agents used to walk through. Per Reddit's own Help Changelog (8 Oct 2026), new public Data API requests stop on 31 October 2026, RSS feeds end on 13 November 2026, unregistered API access starts coming down on 12 January 2027, and remaining public API access ends in March 2027. Cloud agents also keep hitting Reddit's network blocks from datacenter IPs. Our path is different: your agent drafts the comment over our remote MCP, and our Chrome extension posts it from the Reddit session you already have open on your desktop. No Reddit developer app, no API key.

The shutdown timeline

Reddit has published these dates in its Help Changelog and Developer App Registration page:

  • 31 October 2026: New requests for public API access will no longer be accepted.
  • 13 November 2026: Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds.
  • 12 January 2027: API access removal begins for apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit outreach.
  • March 2027: Remaining public API access ends.

If your agent posts to Reddit through an API-based MCP or script, this timeline affects you directly. After March 2027, that route is gone for everyone who does not have a commercial deal with Reddit.

Why API MCPs break

Most Reddit MCPs and automation tools rely on the public Data API. They call endpoints like /api/comment or /api/submit with OAuth tokens issued through a Reddit developer app. When Reddit stops accepting new apps on 31 October 2026, new users cannot even create the credentials these tools need. When the API itself closes in March 2027, existing credentials stop working too.

The API path also requires you to share Reddit credentials with the tool or maintain a separate developer app. That is friction even before the shutdown.

Datacenter IP vs your own Chrome

Even tools that skip the API and use a cloud browser hit a different wall. Reddit blocks or challenges requests from datacenter IPs. We wrote about this in detail in why your AI agent gets blocked on Reddit from a cloud browser. The short version: a browser running on a cloud VM reaches the internet through a datacenter IP, and Reddit treats that as a signal to block or challenge the request.

Our approach is different. Your agent does not open a browser on a cloud computer. Instead, it calls our remote MCP at https://mcp.clawpost.net/mcp, and our Chrome extension posts the comment from the Reddit session you already have open on your desktop. The request comes from your own Chrome, on your own connection, where you are already logged in.

Setup

  1. Create a free account at clawpost.net, add our Chrome extension and pair it.
  2. Stay signed in to Reddit in that Chrome profile.
  3. Add https://mcp.clawpost.net/mcp to Claude Code, Cursor, Hermes, Grok Bot or any remote MCP client and complete OAuth.
  4. Ask: "Draft a reply to this Reddit thread and show it to me before posting."

Your agent calls create_reddit_comment with the thread URL and the comment text. The extension posts it from your Chrome. The agent calls get_post_status to get the live comment URL.

Approve every comment

Reddit's rules ask you to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors." Each subreddit adds its own rules. The best practice for any agent that posts as you:

  • Have the agent show you the exact text before it publishes. Many agents let you require approval for write actions. Use that.
  • Write for the thread in front of you. Do not paste the same text in ten places.
  • Comment where you would comment anyway. If you would not post it by hand, do not have an agent post it.

Our skill file builds in an approval step: the agent drafts, shows you the text, and only publishes after you say yes.

FAQ: Reduck vs Claw Post

Reduck is a Reddit MCP that focuses on reading: search, threads, profiles, and other read-side tools. It is Reddit-only and has deeper read features than we do. We cover the write side: posting comments to Reddit threads, plus replies on X, posts to LinkedIn and Facebook groups. If you need research and reading, Reduck is built for that. If you need to post a comment from your own account, that is what we built Claw Post for.

When this is not the right fit

Our approach needs your desktop Chrome running, with the extension paired and you logged in to Reddit. If you need comments going out while your laptop is closed, a cloud setup is built for that, and our approach is not. We are the step for when the comment has to come from you, not the always-on part.

Summary

  • Reddit is shutting down public API access by March 2027. New developer apps stop being accepted 31 October 2026.
  • API-based Reddit MCPs will stop working when the API closes.
  • Cloud browsers hit datacenter IP blocks even without the API.
  • Claw Post hands the final step to your own logged-in desktop Chrome: your agent drafts, you approve, your browser posts, within each community's rules.
